Detroit borders the five historic Grosse Pointe communities in Wayne County, Michigan. Detroit and it’s surrounding suburbs has a rich history in music. Detroit has produced wildly successful musical artists from virtually every musical era and genre. Pop stars Bob Seger, Madonna, Eminem, and Kid Rock have their roots in Detroit. Detroit is also widely considered to be the birthplace of techno music, and is world famous for it’s Jazz Festival, Electronic Music Festival and Downtown Hoedown. Detroit is home to many historic musical venues including The Max M. Fisher Theater, The Detroit Opera House, The Music Hall, The Fox Theater, and many others. In 1988, the Detroit Music Awards was chartered to recognize talented Detroit musicians working nationally, regionally and locally. The Detroit Music Awards foundation is the only music awarding organization in the country functioning as a non-profit company. Awards are given for music genres;Folk/Acoustic, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Country, Classical, Rock/Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop,Electronic and World.
