These songwriting classes are for instrumental players and voice students. If you are a total beginner and don’t play an instrument you may also come to this workshop. This class is best suited for students ages 10 and up.
Songwriting is a skill that students at any level can begin to learn. Songwriting is one of the main creative outlets for musicians. Many famous songs have been written using just a few basic chords with simple melodies and rhythms. Students in this class will be introduced to the fundamentals of how to write songs in several styles and leave the class with a sense of direction as to how to get better and continually practice their skills.
The class will show how some popular songs were conceived using some of the most fundamental music theory known to man. Examples of songs will be given to help students understand the popular patterns that current composers use in their own writing. Song form and song structure will also be introduced in the class. The goal of the class will be to learn various composing skills and put together a song that will be played back and taken home on in mp3 format!
Modern technology has made it possible for basically anyone who is interested in writing music to have powerful tools to do so. During the songwriter workshop students will be introduced to the software Band in a Box. This program has tools for specifying rhythms, melodies, chords, and other parameters to instantly generate music in various styles. If you haven’t seen it yet then you’re in for a real treat. Band in a Box allows all musicians, regardless of their playing ability, a platform for being creative with music. In the not to far past composers had to have access to the whole band or orchestra just to really hear what their compositions would sound like. Many modern day composers still prefer to work with real people but certainly technology has made it possible for more people to have a similar opportunity in the digital world.
