The Outreach Committee of Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church is proud to host an evening of modern folk and acoustic blues featuring Matt Watroba and Robert Jones on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 16th at 7:00 PM.

The church’s chapel offers an ideal setting for this event, with its warm, intimate atmosphere and outstanding acoustics that promise a memorable experience. Matt and Robert’s performance is family-friendly and accessible for all audiences—from seasoned music lovers to young children. Rather than the familiar 1960s folk tunes, you’ll hear a fresh and vibrant mix of songs that are as timely as they are entertaining. Expect an inspiring evening filled with laughter, meaningful stories, and powerful musical moments.

About the Artists

Matt Watroba and Robert Jones have shared a musical partnership for over two decades. Their collaboration began during their time as radio hosts on Detroit’s WDET-FM, where Matt hosted Folks Like Us and Robert hosted Blues From the Lowlands. Their friendship and mutual passion for American traditional music led them to perform together nationally, building a reputation for their heartfelt performances and dynamic stage presence.

Matt and Robert celebrate the deep roots of American music—folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, and more. Their music captures the stories of history, migration, social change, and collective hope. Together, they create a powerful synergy, blending virtuosity with a shared mission to keep the spirit of American roots music alive and relevant.

We are excited to invite you to the Grosse Pointe Music Academy Winter Recital! This special event is open to all family and friends, and admission is free.
In the spirit of the season, we kindly ask attendees to bring non-perishable food items to donate. Contributions will benefit a local food bank, helping to provide meals for those in need during the winter holidays.

Recital Structure
To accommodate all participants comfortably, the recital will be divided into two sessions. Students must inform their teacher or the front desk staff of their preferred session:

• Session 1 begins at 6:00 PM
• Session 2 begins at 8:00 PM
  Each session will last approximately 60–90 minutes.

Performers may sit anywhere in the auditorium. Students will be called individually to the stage when it is their turn to perform.

Recital Guidelines

• Please remain for the entire session to support all performers. Every student deserves an appreciative audience, regardless of performance order.
• Kindly refrain from talking during performances, and please help keep young children quiet to avoid distracting the performers.
• Students who require instrument tuning should plan to arrive early.
• Memorization of music is not required; however, students are strongly encouraged to bring their sheet music in case of any difficulties.
• Due to time constraints, each performance must be no longer than two minutes. (You’ll be surprised how much music fits in two minutes!)
• Please mark the performance piece clearly with a post-it note or paperclip to ensure quick access.
• Dress should be neat and appropriate. While formal attire is not required, performers should avoid immodest or sloppy clothing. A professional appearance contributes positively to a student’s presentation.
