DADGAD Chord Chart

Guitarists are always looking for new sounds that spark ideas. One of the best ways to do this is by using alternate tunings. A favorite among acoustic players is DADGAD tuning, which creates a wide, open sound that feels both familiar and fresh. To help you get started, we’ve created a free DADGAD Chord Chart PDF you can download today.

What Is DADGAD Tuning?

DADGAD is essentially an open D suspended 4 chord. Instead of the standard tuning (EADGBE), the strings are tuned to D–A–D–G–A–D. The result is a tuning that works beautifully for Celtic music, fingerstyle guitar, and modern acoustic styles.

Many players think it’s difficult at first, but that’s not the case. Three strings—A, D, and G—stay exactly the same as in standard tuning. That makes it easier to adapt. You’ll recognize familiar notes while also discovering new chord shapes that give your playing a unique sound.

Why Use a DADGAD Chord Chart?

When you try a new tuning, your usual shapes no longer fit. This can be frustrating if you rely on memory. A DADGAD Chord Chart solves that problem. It shows you the chords that work best in this tuning, so you don’t waste time guessing.

Using the chart, you’ll see both the similarities and the differences compared to standard tuning. You can practice with confidence and move from simple strumming to more advanced progressions. Many songwriters also use DADGAD for inspiration, since the unusual voicings often lead to fresh musical ideas.

Grab your free DADGAD Chord Chart PDF and keep it nearby while you play. With this chart, you’ll have the tools to unlock new sounds and push your creativity forward.

If you’re a new guitar player, you may be wondering what is a good starter guitar to get you on your way. At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we suggest that you don’t look for the cheapest instrument, as it may have playability issues. On the other hand, you may not want to spend too much, as you’ll be able to make a more informed decision later on once you’ve learned more about the instrument.

One important factor to consider when selecting a guitar is size. If you’re a smaller beginner, you’ll want to look for an instrument that’s the right size for you. Here are a few options for beginners based on age and size:

For younger beginners or those with smaller hands, we suggest looking into 3/4 size guitars. Some great options for smaller beginner guitars include the Yamaha JR1 3/4 Size Dreadnought or the Ibanez PF2MH 3/4 Size Natural. These guitars are designed to fit smaller hands and bodies, making them a great option for young learners.

For teens and adults, we suggest looking into full-size guitars. Some great options for beginner full-size guitars include the Yamaha FS800 Concert Natural or the Yamaha FG800 Dreadnought Natural. These guitars are designed to offer excellent sound quality and playability, making them perfect for players of all skill levels.

Remember, the key to success in music is finding the right instrument for you. These guitars are all excellent options for players of all ages and skill levels, and we highly recommend them. When choosing your instrument, consider your budget, size, and playing style to find the best fit for you.

Grosse Pointe Music Academy Commentary
Based on reporting by Molly Bilker for Downtown Devil
Original article link (Downtown Devil)

At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we celebrate not only the art of playing instruments, but also the craftsmanship behind them. The story of the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery is a powerful reminder of how music and craftsmanship intersect in deeply meaningful ways. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, Roberto-Venn has been training luthiers—those who build and repair stringed instruments—for nearly 50 years, making it the longest-running guitar-making school in North America.

Students at Roberto-Venn don’t just build instruments—they build futures. Over a rigorous five-month program, they craft acoustic and electric guitars by hand, gaining skills that transform their passion into a profession. As Director William Eaton noted, it’s a journey that becomes “a life-changer.”

We were particularly inspired by the culture of camaraderie described in the piece. The shared creative process, long hours, and love for music forge bonds that extend far beyond the classroom. It’s clear that luthiery, much like music education itself, is about connection, discipline, and expression.

From all of us at Grosse Pointe Music Academy, hats off to the students and faculty of Roberto-Venn for preserving and elevating the craft of guitar building. Whether you’re learning to play or learning to build, music continues to offer a lifetime of growth.

About the Artists

Matt Watroba and Robert Jones have shared a musical partnership for over two decades. Their collaboration began during their time as radio hosts on Detroit’s WDET-FM, where Matt hosted Folks Like Us and Robert hosted Blues From the Lowlands. Their friendship and mutual passion for American traditional music led them to perform together nationally, building a reputation for their heartfelt performances and dynamic stage presence.

Matt and Robert celebrate the deep roots of American music—folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, and more. Their music captures the stories of history, migration, social change, and collective hope. Together, they create a powerful synergy, blending virtuosity with a shared mission to keep the spirit of American roots music alive and relevant.

Knowing a wide variety of chords and scales is an essential part of any musician’s growth—but understanding how those elements function together is what empowers creativity. When you play a note over a chord, that note will generally fall into one of three categories: a chord tone, a diatonic scale tone, or a chromatic tone.

Let’s break that down using the common major scale, which contains seven notes and is itself a subset of the twelve-note chromatic scale. If you’re playing a triad (a three-note chord), those three notes are the chord tones. The four other notes in the major scale are diatonic scale tones, and the remaining five are chromatic tones, not native to the scale.

Each of these categories behaves differently:

Chord tones reinforce the harmonic structure. They add depth and resonance but do not change the chord’s identity.

Diatonic scale tones enrich the harmony and can create either consonance or dissonance, depending on how they’re used.

Chromatic tones bring in tension and movement. When used deliberately, they imply modulation or a shift into a different tonal center—even if only briefly.

These possibilities form the basis of melodic soloing, the art of crafting melodies over chord progressions. The interplay between scales and chords is virtually limitless, but the effectiveness of your solo depends on how well you understand the function of each note in context.

To develop your skills in melodic soloing, it’s important to study how different musical styles approach this process. Some genres allow freer movement within the scale, while others demand more intentional note choices. In many cases, even “wrong” notes are highlighted to create a desired effect.

If you’re just beginning to solo, or trying to improve, I recommend choosing one musical style and focusing deeply on its harmonic tendencies. You’ll progress faster by mastering one language before attempting to speak several at once. Use a good reference book, play along with another guitarist or a backing track, and dedicate time to internalizing how each note interacts with the underlying harmony.

A great resource to explore further is Guitarist’s Guide to Scales Over Chords. It’s packed with examples and explanations to help you become confident and expressive in your solos.

Have a favorite solo that inspires you? Share it with us—we’d love to know what moves you musically.

Respectfully,
Henry Bahrou
Guitarist, Music Theorist, Music Academy Director

Yesterday, I shared some thoughts on whether beginning guitar players should start on an acoustic or electric instrument. While I recommended acoustic guitar for most beginners, many will still choose to start with electric — and that’s perfectly fine. If you’ve decided to begin with electric guitar, here are a few important points to keep in mind:

First, understand that inexpensive beginner guitars often look similar to their higher-end counterparts but rarely match them in sound quality. If you are serious about achieving a good tone from the start, it’s wise to bring an experienced guitar player with you when shopping. A knowledgeable player can demonstrate the difference between entry-level and higher-quality instruments, which can be significant even if the price difference seems modest.

One of the primary factors influencing electric guitar tone is the pickup system — essentially, the “microphones” that capture the string vibrations. Like any microphone, there is a wide range of quality. Lower-end pickups tend to produce a thinner, less distinct sound, while higher-end pickups provide a warmer, clearer, and more dynamic tone.

In addition to the electronics, the materials used in the guitar’s construction also matter. Instruments made from premium woods naturally cost more and contribute to richer tone and resonance. Beginner guitars in the $100–$200 range are typically constructed with inexpensive wood, lower-grade hardware, and basic pickups. While these guitars can serve as effective learning tools, it’s important to manage expectations: the sound quality will not match the recordings of your favorite professional artists.

Amplifiers also play a critical role in shaping your electric guitar sound. Amplifiers come in a variety of sizes and feature sets, adding an extra layer of complexity and cost to your initial setup. Although you can technically play an electric guitar without an amplifier, it will be far too quiet to be motivating for practice. Fortunately, good practice amps with decent tone are available starting around $60–$100.

If budget allows and you are committed to learning, consider investing in an instrument that is at least a step above entry-level. Having a better-quality guitar and amplifier can make a noticeable difference in your early playing experience and motivation.

Ultimately, no matter what equipment you start with, the most important factor is your dedication to practicing and improving your skills. A great player can make even modest instruments sound impressive. Focus on developing your ability first; once your skills grow, upgrading your gear will naturally follow.

By Grosse Pointe Music Academy Staff

Beginning guitar students are often faced with an important decision: Should they start on an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar? It’s a common debate. Some have heard that everyone should begin with acoustic guitar, while others argue that starting with electric is easier because the string tension is lighter.

The truth is, there are multiple factors to consider, and the right choice depends on the individual’s goals and preferences. Let’s break it down to help you make the best decision.

Key Similarities
Acoustic and electric guitars share the same tuning and the same number of strings. All fundamental playing techniques can be taught on either instrument. As beginner instruments, they are essentially interchangeable in terms of basic skill development.

Advantages of Starting with Acoustic Guitar

Simplicity: An acoustic guitar requires no external equipment like amplifiers or cables. You can simply pick it up and start practicing.

Focus on Fundamentals: Without extra electronics to adjust, students can focus entirely on learning notes, chords, rhythm, and proper technique.

Portability: No need to haul an amplifier or search for power outlets — acoustic guitars are self-contained and easy to transport.

Set-up: While it’s true that acoustic guitars tend to have slightly more string tension than electrics, a properly built and well-set-up acoustic guitar will feel very comfortable to play.

When Electric Guitar Might Be the Right Choice
For students who are especially drawn to the sound and look of electric guitars — especially younger students motivated by the style and energy of electric guitar playing — starting with an electric guitar may help keep enthusiasm high. However, it’s important to remember that no matter how flashy the guitar looks, meaningful progress still comes down to practicing scales, chords, and techniques regularly.

Electric guitars introduce more complexity with volume controls, tone knobs, pickup selectors, and amplifiers, which may sometimes become distractions for beginners who are still learning basic playing skills.

Our Recommendation
In most cases, we recommend starting with an acoustic guitar. Choose one that fits comfortably and has been properly set up for playability. At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we offer a free guitar evaluation to check whether your guitar needs a professional setup — just bring it by during our regular business hours.

Students who practice consistently will quickly progress and soon appreciate the unique roles that both acoustic and electric guitars play in modern music. Starting with acoustic builds a strong foundation and makes transitioning to electric guitar smoother when the time is right.

We hope this helps you make a confident decision as you begin your musical journey!
Have questions or want to share your thoughts? Feel free to leave a comment below — we’d love to hear from you.

While we primarily focus on modern guitar instruction styles—such as rock, pop, country, blues, jazz, and contemporary music—students with classical guitars are welcome to join. (Those wishing to study classical guitar specifically should inquire about private instruction.)

At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we love supporting fellow local businesses that make our community a better place to live, work, and unwind. One such neighborhood gem is Marge’s Bar & Grille, located right in the heart of Grosse Pointe.

A true local staple, Marge’s Bar has been serving up great food, cold drinks, and welcoming vibes for decades. Whether you’re stopping in for a burger after band practice, grabbing dinner before a concert, or just catching up with friends over a round, Marge’s is a go-to spot that always delivers.

What we love about Marge’s:

Classic Neighborhood Atmosphere – Relaxed and welcoming, it’s the kind of place where everyone feels at home.

Great Food – From bar favorites to comfort food classics, their menu has something for everyone.

Live Music & Community – As big supporters of local music ourselves, we always appreciate places that help keep the live music scene vibrant.

Next time you’re near Mack Avenue, swing by Marge’s for a bite or a beverage—and tell them your friends at Grosse Pointe Music Academy sent you!

Supporting local businesses like Marge’s helps strengthen our Grosse Pointe community, and we’re proud to share the spotlight with such a longstanding neighborhood favorite.
