Our cozy, professional teaching studios are located in Building 4 of the Canton Ford Crossing complex at 5880 N. Canton Center Rd., Suite 425. (If you are heading north on Canton Center Road from Ford Road, the complex is on your right.)
Visit us anytime Monday–Friday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM or Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM for a free tour of the facility.

Important Information for Students:
All students should have their own instrument to practice at home. Regular practice is essential for musical development, and having the right instrument ensures you can make the most of your lessons. If you need assistance choosing an instrument, our staff and instructors are happy to guide you.
We can also help with rental or purchase options depending on the instrument you wish to study.

Semi-Private Lessons:
We offer semi-private lessons for two students wishing to study together, which is a great option for beginners. Over time, however, individual lessons may become necessary as each student progresses at their own pace to ensure the best learning outcomes.

So, I’ve finally done it.  I’ve invested in a set of drums.  I set ‘em up and started pounding the skins right away in my mother’s basement/my bachelor pad.  Man, I’m rockin’ now!  I’m thinking I might start up a rock band once I get my timings down.  How do you feel about the name, “Drum Major” because I wanna be a major drummer?  Pretty sweet, right?

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys gave drum lessons because I think taking a few lessons could help me figure out the secret to drumming.  I’ve been working on it, pounding away all through the night, ‘til mom yells down the stairs and tells me to cut it out.  But I just can’t seem to figure out how to get my foot to hit the foot pedal while my left hand pounds the snare and my right taps the cymbal.  When I do it, it sounds like a car crash and I get all tangled up.  I know I’m doing something wrong.

You know the other thing is that I can’t really get my drum set to sound as loud as I think it should.  I don’t get it.  I’m drumming but it sounds muffled.  And after I’m drumming for a little while, my fingers really start to hurt.  In fact, sometimes when I’m really jamming out, my fingers actually start to bleed.  Is this normal?

So, if you give drum lessons, let me know.  I’d love to sign up.  I know Grosse Pointe Music Academy gives lessons in just about every instrument, so I figured drums have got to be on the list.  I’m hoping at least a couple lessons will help me figure this whole drumming thing out so I can tour with my band, “Drum Major” soon.

When I first began teaching guitar lessons in the Plymouth-Canton area years ago, I never imagined how deeply I would fall in love with teaching itself. Watching students progress, succeed, and fall in love with music fed my own passion for education and made me realize the greater need for quality music instruction in our communities.

That realization led to the founding of Grosse Pointe Music Academy.
We saw the tremendous musical talent within Grosse Pointe—fueled by excellent school music programs—and realized there was a need for a dedicated academy offering private and group music lessons beyond the school day.

We started humbly, offering primarily guitar lessons. But with growing interest from families in the community, we expanded quickly. Today, the Grosse Pointe Music Academy offers a wide range of lessons: guitar, piano, drums, bass, voice, violin, woodwinds, and more. We’ve built a team of some of Detroit’s finest, university-trained instructors, all dedicated to nurturing each student’s love of music at every age and skill level.

Did you know that late-night talk show host Craig Ferguson is a drummer? So are actor Billy Bob Thornton and illusionist Criss Angel. While Angel may be known for his sleight-of-hand and elaborate stunts, keeping time on a drum kit is no trick—it’s an art form that takes skill, coordination, and most importantly, a great teacher.

Drumming is as old as civilization itself. Archaeological evidence dates drum use as far back as 6000 BC, when early humans used hollowed-out logs to create rhythmic sounds—perhaps as a form of communication or ritual. Over time, drumming evolved into a central component of cultural celebrations and, eventually, music as we know it today. The drum may be humanity’s oldest musical instrument—and it remains the heartbeat of modern music.

That said, while you can now download digital drum loops or “play” a drum kit through a video game, those options are no substitute for real musicianship. We like to call it the “dumbing of drumming.” True drumming requires real technique and musical understanding—skills that are learned, practiced, and refined with the guidance of a dedicated instructor.

If you’ve ever tried to replicate the complex rhythms of drumming legends like Neil Peart of Rush, you know how demanding it can be. Peart is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time—not because he relied on technology, but because of his tireless dedication to mastering his craft. And behind that mastery was, without doubt, a great teacher.

Drummers often play from the back of the stage, quietly driving the energy of the entire performance. They may not always be in the spotlight, but they are the foundation of the band—the ones who keep the tempo, shape the groove, and make everything else possible. In many ways, the drummer is the true leader of the ensemble.

So if you’re thinking about learning drums, remember: it’s more than just keeping a beat. It’s about joining a long and proud history of rhythm makers—and with the right teacher, who knows where your journey might lead?

And no, Caveman Og and the Java Men didn’t really top the charts in 5902 BC—there were no radio stations back then. But if there had been, you can bet they’d have had a killer rhythm section.

The concert will take place on Thursday, September 8th at 7:30 PM at the historic Redford Theatre. This performance will be filmed as part of the movie, giving attendees a chance to be part of a live audience in a feature film production!

About the Event and Film:
Ethan Bortnick, a gifted pianist and composer who began playing by ear at age three, stars in Anything Is Possible, a film that explores important themes like homelessness and adoption. Ethan, who has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and headlined in Las Vegas, cowrote and recorded music for the film and may even be scoring parts of it.

The movie is directed by Demetrius Navarro (E.R.) and executive produced by Pastor Marvin Miles. The project also features well-known actors such as Kym Whitley and Jonathan Bennett. Filming has taken place at several locations in Detroit, including Belle Isle.

Thursday’s concert will feature Ethan performing many of his own compositions. True to his signature performance style, the evening will include audience interaction, onstage participation, and a lively, family-friendly atmosphere. A portion of the proceeds from the film project will benefit charitable causes, including the Children’s Miracle Network.
