Grosse Pointe Music Academy is excited to share several program expansions for the 2026 enrollment season, offering students and families even more opportunities to learn, grow, and make music together.

Founded in 2005, Grosse Pointe Music Academy has served the local community for over two decades, providing private music instruction in a supportive, welcoming environment. As interest in music education continues to grow, the academy is expanding lesson availability, adding new seasonal camps, and welcoming additional faculty members to better serve students of all ages.

Expanded lesson offerings for students of all ages

The academy offers private music lessons for beginners through advanced students, with instruction available in:

Piano

Guitar

Voice

Drums

Bass guitar and ukulele

Violin, viola, cello, and upright bass

Flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone

Lessons are available for children, teens, and adults, with flexible scheduling options designed to fit busy family routines.

“Our focus has always been on providing clear instruction in a supportive, welcoming environment,” said Henry Bahrou, school director of Grosse Pointe Music Academy. “As more families look for meaningful creative outlets, we’re expanding our programs and faculty while maintaining the personal, one-on-one approach our students value.”

Seasonal camps and group programs

In addition to weekly private lessons, Grosse Pointe Music Academy offers seasonal music camps and group programs throughout the year. These programs give students the opportunity to collaborate with peers, build confidence, and apply their skills in real musical settings.

Camps and group classes are designed to complement private lessons by encouraging creativity, teamwork, and performance experience in a fun, structured environment.

Year-round enrollment

Enrollment at Grosse Pointe Music Academy is open year-round, with new students accepted on a rolling basis. Whether a student is picking up an instrument for the first time or continuing their musical development, the academy works to match each student with the right instructor and learning plan.

Playing Guitar Left Handed – My Honest Advice After 30+ Years

When I first started playing guitar, my parents gave me a left-handed model as a gift. Since I’m a lefty, it seemed logical. Why wouldn’t I play guitar left handed? Now, over 30 years later, I can tell you—I wouldn’t recommend it for most beginners.

Yes, I’m still playing left handed, and at this point there’s no switching. But if I could go back, I’d probably do it differently.

Guitar Is a Two-Handed Instrument

One of the biggest realizations I had early on is that guitar truly is a two-handed instrument. Both your fretting and strumming hands have to learn completely new movements. In the beginning, neither of my hands felt coordinated. I believe I could have learned just as well playing right handed.

There’s also the practical side to consider. Even today, left handed guitars make up likely less than 1% of the market. Sure, you can find them, and yes, you can even flip a right handed guitar and play it upside down (some lefty legends have). But it’s not that simple—stringing, setup, and parts are all affected. And you’ll likely miss out on the spontaneous thrill of picking up a guitar at a shop, party, or lesson studio unless it’s custom-fit for lefties.

Is There a Real Advantage?

I’m not a doctor, so I won’t speak to any deep physiological reasons that might make left handed playing more natural. But from what I’ve seen—and experienced—hand dominance doesn’t need to dictate how you play. Writing or throwing left handed doesn’t mean you can’t learn to play a right handed guitar. It just takes practice either way.

The Hidden Benefit of Being Lefty

On the bright side, I’ve probably saved a small fortune over the years. Being left handed has definitely stopped me from making impulse guitar purchases—most of the tempting ones are built for righties!

So if you’re just starting out, think carefully before committing to playing guitar left handed. You might thank yourself later.

String Combinations for Guitar: Exploring the Possibilities

When it comes to guitar playing, understanding string combinations for guitar can be an eye-opening way to think about chords, scales, and intervals. With six strings on the guitar, there are a total of 63 possible string combinations. This number comes from counting each individual string, every possible two-string combination, and then every combination of three, four, five, and all six strings as one group.

Why Bother With String Combinations?

You might wonder if analyzing string combinations for guitar is necessary, especially if you’re just trying to learn to play music. The answer depends on your approach to learning. While some of these combinations are more musically useful than others, the fact remains: each of the 63 string combinations represents a unique relationship between strings and intervals.

Understanding these combinations goes beyond academic curiosity. It can be incredibly helpful for identifying patterns on the fretboard. For example, most guitar method books teach chords as full six-string shapes, but these can obscure the smaller, more manageable patterns on two or three strings. By studying these smaller combinations, you can uncover useful shapes and patterns that are often overlooked.

Practical Applications

Knowing string combinations for guitar can enhance your understanding of chords and scales in practical ways. It allows you to break down complex ideas into simpler components. For instance, you can practice the C Major scale or C Major pentatonic scale on just the highest three strings, or focus on the lower three strings. This approach helps you to visualize and play these patterns more fluidly across the neck.

In the three attached PDF documents, you’ll find the C Major Scale, C Major Pentatonic Scale, and C Major Triad laid out in all 63 string variations. It may seem like overkill, but for some guitarists, this deep analysis is a key to unlocking the full potential of the instrument.

Decide for yourself if this method of dissecting string combinations for guitar is useful. Whether you choose to explore all 63 possibilities or just a select few, understanding these combinations can open up new avenues for musical expression.

What Is the Point of the CAGED System on Guitar?

The CAGED system is one of the most useful tools for understanding the guitar fretboard. But what is the point of the CAGED system on guitar? The CAGED system is based on standard tuning, and it’s designed to help players visualize and play chords all over the neck by recognizing familiar chord shapes.

How the CAGED System Works

The CAGED system gets its name from the basic open chord shapes: C, A, G, E, and D. These five chord shapes are the foundation of many guitar chord structures and positions. As you move these shapes up the neck, they allow you to play the same chord in different positions. For example, the open C major shape can be shifted up the fretboard to match the open position shape a D, E, A, or G major chord, depending on where you place your fingers.

The point of the CAGED system on guitar is that it helps players see how each major chord can be played using five different shapes. No matter the key, the chords will always follow the same pattern, making it an essential mapping tool for understanding how to navigate the fretboard.

Why CAGED is Important for Guitarists

If you’re a beginner, don’t be intimidated by the CAGED system. In fact, mastering the system is a natural progression after you’ve learned your basic open chords. Once you’re comfortable with playing open chords like C, A, and G, the CAGED system helps you take those shapes and use them across the entire neck. This is especially helpful for intermediate players looking to explore beyond the open position and add versatility to their playing.

What is the point of the CAGED system on guitar for advanced players? Even for more experienced guitarists, CAGED is an excellent reference for mapping out scales, chords, and arpeggios. It’s a tool that will make learning the fretboard easier and more organized, especially when moving into different keys and chord positions.

Conclusion: Mastering the CAGED System

Ultimately, the CAGED system is one way to break down the fretboard, helping you visualize chord shapes across all positions. While learning every note on the fretboard is the ultimate goal, the CAGED system provides a practical and structured map to guide you. For more details, check out the FREE PDF that outlines how each major chord fits into the CAGED system. (Buy Printed Version on Amazon)

Understanding what the point of the CAGED system on guitar is will significantly help you improve your playing and navigate the fretboard with confidence.

Summer Music Lessons at Grosse Pointe Music Academy

Whether you’re just starting out or continuing your musical journey, summer is the perfect time to keep your progress on track.

Keep the Momentum Going

Taking a break from music lessons over the summer can result in more than just a pause — it can lead to setbacks. Skills fade quickly when they aren’t being used. We’ve often seen students return in the fall needing to revisit material they had already mastered. Staying active with lessons ensures that your time, effort, and financial investment continue to build forward — not backward.

In fact, summer offers a unique opportunity to accelerate your learning. With more free time and fewer academic distractions, many students choose to take an extra weekly lesson or extend their session length. It’s a smart way to boost confidence and skill before the busy fall season.

Traveling? No Problem — Try Zoom Lessons!

Summer travel doesn’t have to interrupt your musical progress. With virtual lessons via Zoom, students can stay connected to their instructor from anywhere — at home, up north, or even across the globe. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or laptop and a quiet place to play.

Online lessons offer the same personalized instruction as in-person sessions, with added flexibility to fit your schedule.

The group was performing Weezer’s “Undone – The Sweater Song” when things took an unexpected turn. Despite the chaos, the moment became a memorable and widely shared performance.

What Happened on Stage

Like many live performances, this moment highlights how unpredictable playing music in a group can be. Equipment issues, timing, and coordination all play a role in live performance, especially for developing musicians.

Fortunately, the instructors and staff responded quickly, made sure everyone was okay, and the group continued their performance. What could have been a stressful moment turned into something memorable and even humorous.

What This Shows About Performing Live

Live performance requires preparation and coordination

Unexpected situations can happen at any time

Confidence comes from experience and repetition

Learning to recover is part of becoming a musician

Moments like this are part of the learning process and often become the most memorable experiences for students.
