DADGAD Chord Chart

Guitarists are always looking for new sounds that spark ideas. One of the best ways to do this is by using alternate tunings. A favorite among acoustic players is DADGAD tuning, which creates a wide, open sound that feels both familiar and fresh. To help you get started, we’ve created a free DADGAD Chord Chart PDF you can download today.

What Is DADGAD Tuning?

DADGAD is essentially an open D suspended 4 chord. Instead of the standard tuning (EADGBE), the strings are tuned to D–A–D–G–A–D. The result is a tuning that works beautifully for Celtic music, fingerstyle guitar, and modern acoustic styles.

Many players think it’s difficult at first, but that’s not the case. Three strings—A, D, and G—stay exactly the same as in standard tuning. That makes it easier to adapt. You’ll recognize familiar notes while also discovering new chord shapes that give your playing a unique sound.

Why Use a DADGAD Chord Chart?

When you try a new tuning, your usual shapes no longer fit. This can be frustrating if you rely on memory. A DADGAD Chord Chart solves that problem. It shows you the chords that work best in this tuning, so you don’t waste time guessing.

Using the chart, you’ll see both the similarities and the differences compared to standard tuning. You can practice with confidence and move from simple strumming to more advanced progressions. Many songwriters also use DADGAD for inspiration, since the unusual voicings often lead to fresh musical ideas.

Download Your Free Guide

Ready to explore?
What is the Major Scale Chord Explorer?

The Major Scale Chord Explorer is an interactive online tool designed for musicians, songwriters, and music students who want to deepen their understanding of chord relationships in major keys.

With just a few clicks, you can:

Select any of the 15 major keys from a simple dropdown menu.

Instantly view its diatonic triads — and optionally, its diatonic 7th chords for richer textures.

Explore secondary dominants to add spice and forward motion.

Borrow chords from the parallel minor for moody, unexpected color.

Why It’s a Game-Changer for Learning and Creativity

For Music Theory Study

Whether you’re new to Roman numeral analysis or brushing up on advanced harmonic concepts, this widget provides clear, immediate feedback. Each chord is displayed with its proper Roman numeral, and flats appear as real musical symbols (♭ instead of “b”), making it easy to read and remember.

By cycling between diatonic, secondary dominant, and borrowed chord modes, you can see how these chords relate within the key, reinforcing theory concepts through visual learning.

For Songwriting Inspiration

Stuck in a I–V–vi–IV rut? With the Explorer, you can instantly spot alternative chords — like ii7 or a bVII from the parallel minor — that can transform a predictable progression into something fresh.

The cycle button makes it effortless to audition new harmonic flavors, encouraging experimentation without theory books or guesswork.

For Chord Substitution Practice

Seasoned players often swap chords to create smoother voice leading or add harmonic interest. The Major Scale Chord Explorer makes substitution options visible at a glance. Need a dominant function chord? Switch to secondary dominants and see every V-of target chord in the key. Want something unexpected? Borrow from the parallel minor for a bittersweet twist.

A Design That Gets Out of the Way

Unlike bulky desktop theory programs, this widget is built for speed and clarity:

Clean, minimal interface with a focus on the chords themselves.

Responsive design that works equally well on desktop, tablet, or phone.

Instant feedback — no loading screens, no scrolling, no distractions.

The dropdown key selector, crisp chord notation, and intuitive category toggle make it ideal for quick reference during songwriting sessions, lessons, or rehearsals.

Easy to Embed, Easy to Use

The Major Scale Chord Explorer isn’t just for personal use — it’s also perfect for educators, music bloggers, and online course creators. You can embed it directly into your website with a small snippet of code, giving your readers or students instant access without leaving your page.

This makes it an excellent companion for:

Online music theory lessons.

Blog posts on harmony and chord progressions.

Digital songwriting workbooks.

See It in Action

Choose a key, tap the cycle button to explore diatonic, secondary dominant, and borrowed chords, and start experimenting. You might just stumble on your next great progression — and now you’ll understand why it works.

In Short

The Major Scale Chord Explorer is:

A fast, clear reference for all major keys.

A teaching tool for understanding functional harmony.

A creativity booster for songwriters.

Lightweight and embeddable for web use.

Whether you’re a student decoding your first ii–V–I, a songwriter hunting for your next hook, or a teacher looking for an elegant online resource, this tool belongs in your toolkit.

Four-chord progressions are at the heart of countless songs across genres like rock, pop, folk, and country. These simple combinations of chords create the harmonic foundation for melodies, lyrics, and grooves—and mastering them is one of the most useful skills for any guitarist. Whether you’re a beginner working on basic chord transitions or an experienced player looking to break out of a creative rut, our Random Chord Progression Generator offers a fast and fun way to get inspired.

What Does the Generator Do?

This easy-to-use tool lets you choose from all 15 major keys commonly used on guitar. Once you’ve selected your key, you’ll also choose whether or not to allow repeated chords. Then the generator outputs a four-chord progression using the six most useful chords in that key. These progressions are randomized, but always musically functional—giving you a real-world foundation to practice rhythm, songwriting, improvisation, and more.

Why Focus on Four Chords?

Four-chord progressions are everywhere. They’re used in everything from classic rock riffs to country ballads to modern acoustic songs. Learning to play and recognize these common patterns helps you understand song structure and develop your ear. It’s also a great way to improve your transitions between chords and expand your vocabulary as a rhythm guitarist.

Not Sure How to Play the Chords?

If you don’t know all the chords in your generated progression, don’t worry. We’ve created a free downloadable chord chart that shows every chord used in the generator. Prefer a printed version? You can also order a copy on Amazon for convenience and durability.

Major Scales for Guitar and Piano

For any musician, especially beginners and intermediate students, learning the major scales for guitar and piano is an essential step toward true fluency. It’s not just about technique — it’s about understanding the structure of music itself.

Unfortunately, far too many students skip this crucial step. That’s why Henry Bahrou, guitarist, music theorist, and director of Grosse Pointe Music Academy, created the Scale Mastery Workbook: The 15 Major Scales for Guitar and Piano — a comprehensive, practice-driven workbook designed to help musicians memorize, write, and internalize all 15 major scales using a proven 30-day repetition system.

Why Learning Major Scales Is Essential

Major scales are the DNA of all Western music. From understanding chord progressions and reading sheet music to soloing and composing, knowing these scales gives musicians the tools to communicate in the universal language of music.

While most theory resources cover the seven basic major scales, the Scale Mastery Workbook goes further — covering all 15, including enharmonic equivalents like C♯ and D♭. This clarity is vital for both practical musicianship and theoretical understanding.

Introducing the Scale Mastery Workbook

Built with both piano and guitar learners in mind, this workbook presents each of the 15 major scales in a clear, approachable format using:

Standard notation on treble clef

Guitar tablature for each scale

Piano keyboard diagrams for every key

Workbook pages for daily written recitation

Designed to be used over a 30-day period, the book’s goal is simple but powerful: turn scale knowledge into second nature.

👉 Available now: Scale Mastery Workbook on Amazon

Who This Workbook Is For

Though it’s titled for guitar and piano, this resource is perfect for:

Students learning music theory

Musicians looking to solidify their scale knowledge

Music teachers seeking a classroom companion

Adult learners returning to music

Parents supporting kids in structured lessons

The workbook is most effective for students ages 8 and up and works best with the guidance of a music teacher — although self-taught musicians with basic theory skills will benefit too.

Why Henry Bahrou Wrote This Book

“As a teacher and director at Grosse Pointe Music Academy, I saw a common problem — students could play scales, but few could spell them or write them confidently. Especially guitarists. This workbook addresses that exact gap,” says Bahrou.

Unlike books overloaded with jargon, Scale Mastery Workbook is about practice over theory, helping learners master the 15 major scales through structured repetition and visualization.

What’s Inside the Workbook

All 15 major scales in standard notation + TAB

Clear piano diagrams for each scale

Treble clef-only workbook sheets for daily scale writing

A full 30-day repetition plan laid out to promote retention

Clear, uncluttered layouts for student-friendly learning

The format is visually clean and direct — making it easy to stick to the plan and see real progress.

Why 15 Major Scales?

If you’ve only learned 7 major scales, you’re missing out. Music isn’t written only in “easy keys.” Learning all 15 (including enharmonic equivalents) gives you the ability to play and think in any key — which is essential for reading, transposing, composing, and improvising.

Benefits of Daily Written Recitation

Writing music by hand strengthens the brain’s connection to the material. When students physically write each scale daily — as the book instructs — they internalize spelling, interval patterns, and scale shapes more deeply than passive review allows.

After 30 days, most students can recite any major scale from memory, write it quickly on staff, and visualize it on their instrument.

Not Just for Guitar and Piano

The layout of the workbook uses guitar tablature and piano keys because they’re the most visual instruments for learning. But the theory applies to any instrument. Brass players, vocalists, violinists — anyone can benefit.

Bahrou often says, “Even if piano isn’t your instrument, it should be your reference point. Every musician should know piano.”

What Makes This Workbook Unique?

It’s active, not passive: you don’t just read scales — you write them.

It’s visually guided: great for visual learners, thanks to TAB and keyboard diagrams.

It’s simple: no overwhelming theory, just practical repetition and memorization.

It’s complete: all 15 keys — not just the “easy” ones.

What Students and Teachers Are Saying

While formal reviews are still gathering, teachers using the workbook have reported:

“This is what I’ve been needing to give my students structure.”
“Clear, clean, and practical — especially for guitar players.”
“The daily writing makes a huge difference in retention.”

Where to Buy

📘 Available exclusively on Amazon:
👉 Buy the Scale Mastery Workbook

At just a few dollars more than a blank notebook, this resource packs high educational value into a format that actually gets used — not just shelved.

Conclusion: A Smarter Way to Learn Major Scales

If you’re tired of second-guessing spellings, struggling to memorize patterns, or bouncing between theory books with no real plan, this is your moment. The Scale Mastery Workbook is a no-nonsense, results-focused guide for mastering major scales once and for all.

🎯 Take control of your music education.
✍️ Start writing, reciting, and mastering — one scale at a time.

String Combinations for Guitar: Exploring the Possibilities

When it comes to guitar playing, understanding string combinations for guitar can be an eye-opening way to think about chords, scales, and intervals. With six strings on the guitar, there are a total of 63 possible string combinations. This number comes from counting each individual string, every possible two-string combination, and then every combination of three, four, five, and all six strings as one group.

Why Bother With String Combinations?

You might wonder if analyzing string combinations for guitar is necessary, especially if you’re just trying to learn to play music. The answer depends on your approach to learning. While some of these combinations are more musically useful than others, the fact remains: each of the 63 string combinations represents a unique relationship between strings and intervals.

Understanding these combinations goes beyond academic curiosity. It can be incredibly helpful for identifying patterns on the fretboard. For example, most guitar method books teach chords as full six-string shapes, but these can obscure the smaller, more manageable patterns on two or three strings. By studying these smaller combinations, you can uncover useful shapes and patterns that are often overlooked.

Practical Applications

Knowing string combinations for guitar can enhance your understanding of chords and scales in practical ways. It allows you to break down complex ideas into simpler components. For instance, you can practice the C Major scale or C Major pentatonic scale on just the highest three strings, or focus on the lower three strings. This approach helps you to visualize and play these patterns more fluidly across the neck.

In the three attached PDF documents, you’ll find the C Major Scale, C Major Pentatonic Scale, and C Major Triad laid out in all 63 string variations. It may seem like overkill, but for some guitarists, this deep analysis is a key to unlocking the full potential of the instrument.

Decide for yourself if this method of dissecting string combinations for guitar is useful. Whether you choose to explore all 63 possibilities or just a select few, understanding these combinations can open up new avenues for musical expression.

What Is the Point of the CAGED System on Guitar?

The CAGED system is one of the most useful tools for understanding the guitar fretboard. But what is the point of the CAGED system on guitar? The CAGED system is based on standard tuning, and it’s designed to help players visualize and play chords all over the neck by recognizing familiar chord shapes.

How the CAGED System Works

The CAGED system gets its name from the basic open chord shapes: C, A, G, E, and D. These five chord shapes are the foundation of many guitar chord structures and positions. As you move these shapes up the neck, they allow you to play the same chord in different positions. For example, the open C major shape can be shifted up the fretboard to match the open position shape a D, E, A, or G major chord, depending on where you place your fingers.

The point of the CAGED system on guitar is that it helps players see how each major chord can be played using five different shapes. No matter the key, the chords will always follow the same pattern, making it an essential mapping tool for understanding how to navigate the fretboard.

Why CAGED is Important for Guitarists

If you’re a beginner, don’t be intimidated by the CAGED system. In fact, mastering the system is a natural progression after you’ve learned your basic open chords. Once you’re comfortable with playing open chords like C, A, and G, the CAGED system helps you take those shapes and use them across the entire neck. This is especially helpful for intermediate players looking to explore beyond the open position and add versatility to their playing.

What is the point of the CAGED system on guitar for advanced players? Even for more experienced guitarists, CAGED is an excellent reference for mapping out scales, chords, and arpeggios. It’s a tool that will make learning the fretboard easier and more organized, especially when moving into different keys and chord positions.

Conclusion: Mastering the CAGED System

Ultimately, the CAGED system is one way to break down the fretboard, helping you visualize chord shapes across all positions. While learning every note on the fretboard is the ultimate goal, the CAGED system provides a practical and structured map to guide you. For more details, check out the FREE PDF that outlines how each major chord fits into the CAGED system. (Buy Printed Version on Amazon)

Understanding what the point of the CAGED system on guitar is will significantly help you improve your playing and navigate the fretboard with confidence.

What is DADGAD Tuning?

DADGAD tuning is an alternative guitar tuning that differs from the standard tuning most guitarists are familiar with. To achieve DADGAD tuning, you lower three of your strings: the sixth string (low E) drops to D, the second string (B) drops to A, and the first string (high E) drops to D. The other three strings (A, D, and G) stay the same. This creates a DADGAD sound when played open, forming a D suspended chord.

Why Use DADGAD Tuning?

One of the reasons guitarists experiment with DADGAD tuning is because it opens up different tonal possibilities. The open strings naturally create a suspended chord, which is neither major nor minor. This gives the tuning a unique, open sound that many musicians find appealing, particularly in genres like folk and Celtic music. Unlike standard tuning, DADGAD makes it easy to use open strings while playing in multiple keys, which can give your music a more resonant and flowing quality.

Suspended Chords in DADGAD

A suspended chord is made up of a root, a perfect fourth, and a perfect fifth. In the case of DADGAD tuning, the open strings form a D suspended chord. This chord can be found in several keys, including D major, G major, F major, C major, and B-flat major. This means you can use DADGAD tuning to play in multiple keys without needing to retune your guitar, making it a flexible option for guitarists looking to experiment.

The Difference from Standard Tuning

While standard tuning aligns with a five-note system and is commonly used across various styles of music, DADGAD tuning offers an alternative for those interested in exploring new sounds. The open strings in DADGAD allow you to play in different keys while taking advantage of the ringing, sustained quality of open strings. This can be especially useful when looking to create a more atmospheric or drone-like sound.

What is the Most Common Guitar Tuning?

Standard tuning, used on classical, acoustic, and electric guitars, is often criticized as being arbitrary or randomly chosen at some point in history. However, upon closer examination, it turns out to be the best option for balancing versatility in both chord formations and scale navigation across the fretboard. When considering what is the most common guitar tuning, it’s clear that standard tuning remains the most practical and widely used choice due to its ability to accommodate a broad range of musical styles and techniques.

Standard tuning, EADGBE, might seem perplexing at first glance, especially to beginners. A novice can quickly observe the criticism by noting that the interval distance between each string is uniform—except between the 3rd (G) and 2nd (B) strings. This break in consistency can be confusing. However, understanding a bit of music theory helps to clarify why this happens.

In standard tuning, the interval between most strings is a perfect 4th: from E to A, A to D, D to G, and B to E. But between the 3rd (G) and 2nd (B) strings, the interval is a major 3rd. This major 3rd exception is essential for a practical reason: it allows the 1st string (high E) to match the pitch of the 6th string (low E). This alignment significantly influences the player’s ability to form chords and play scales smoothly across all six strings.

Additionally, when we examine the notes in standard tuning, we discover that they fit into both the G major and E minor pentatonic scales. The major scale is a seven-note system from which three different pentatonic scales can be derived, each consisting of five notes. This means that the open strings of the guitar naturally contain notes from three major scales: C, G, and D major. This intrinsic alignment with these scales makes standard tuning exceptionally practical, as it accommodates many common musical keys.

Moreover, there’s another benefit to standard tuning that beginners can appreciate: the open strings create helpful landmarks. For example, strings 4 (D), 3 (G), and 2 (B) form a major chord, while strings 3 (G), 2 (B), and 1 (high E) form a minor chord. These chord patterns make it easier for guitarists, especially beginners, to start navigating the fretboard. The alignment of the strings offers useful reference points, allowing players to easily form common chords without needing to shift too much across the neck of the guitar.

The pentatonic scale is just one of many possible five-note combinations that can be derived from the major scale. I believe the reason this particular five-note pattern became known as ‘The Pentatonic Scale’ is because it’s the only combination that omits both the minor 2nd (half-step) and the augmented 4th/diminished 5th interval. These dissonant intervals are avoided in the pentatonic scale, which is what gives it its distinct, consonant sound and widespread use in various musical styles.

In conclusion, while some may criticize standard tuning as arbitrary, it is far from random. The arrangement of intervals, including the major 3rd exception, allows for easy access to chords and scales across the fretboard, making it highly versatile. The connection between the open strings and the G major and E minor pentatonic scales further highlights its practicality. Ultimately, what is the most common guitar tuning? It’s the tried-and-true standard tuning, EADGBE, which continues to be the most widely used tuning for classical, acoustic, and electric guitars alike due to its balanced blend of simplicity and versatility for players of all levels.
