Choosing the right instrument doesn’t need to be complicated. A few simple factors will help you make the right decision:
Age and Size
Younger students often benefit from smaller instruments that are easier to hold and play.
Acoustic vs. Electric
- Acoustic instruments are simple and require no extra equipment
- Electric instruments (like electric guitar) need an amplifier but offer more sound options
Practice Environment
If volume is a concern, options like keyboards with headphones or electronic drums may be a better fit.
Long-Term Interest
If a student is serious about continuing lessons, it’s worth choosing a slightly higher-quality instrument that will last.
Renting vs. Buying
For some instruments, renting is a great option—especially for younger students.
Renting may be better if:
- You’re unsure if the student will stick with lessons
- The student is very young and may outgrow the instrument

- The student is committed to regular practice
