National Association for Music Education (NAfME) – Advocacy Resources
According to leading national education organizations, every student should have access to a strong education in the arts. Music, in particular, plays a crucial role in student success — not only academically, but socially and emotionally.
Studies show that students involved in music programs perform better in math and reading, are less likely to engage in disruptive behavior, and develop important skills like discipline, teamwork, and creativity. Participation in music is also linked to higher SAT scores and increased college admission rates.
Beyond academics, music fosters brain development, emotional well-being, and social connection. From enhancing cognitive abilities to strengthening communities, the benefits of music education are well-documented and far-reaching.
Supporting strong, sequential music programs taught by qualified educators ensures that students are prepared for success in school, in society, and throughout life.
Summary based on advocacy materials from the National Association for Music Education and U.S. Department of Education reports.
I am an elementary music specialist in Texas, and as I believe is true across the country, many Texas schools are hurting. Finances are tight and so, in many districts, the arts are the first to be cut. While my district has taken a formal stand to continue to support the arts, and my job has not been threatened,I really appreciate your post of this wonderful article. I like having the data from all of these proven studies concerning music. Thank you for sharing.
