The Transformative Power of Music Education
Commentary inspired by Mommy Maestra’s article on The Harmony Project and PBS Newshour
At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we’ve long believed in the value of music education not just as an artistic pursuit, but as a powerful influence on a child’s overall development. A recent segment on PBS Newshour — shared in a thoughtful article by Mommy Maestra — highlights this beautifully through a feature on The Harmony Project, a nonprofit bringing free music instruction and instruments to underserved communities.
Founded in 2001 by Dr. Margaret Martin, The Harmony Project is a shining example of how music can serve as a catalyst for academic and personal growth. While we often think of music classes as enrichment, this program has shown measurable benefits in language development, cognitive growth, and even college enrollment rates among its participants.
The program’s success aligns with what many educators and families already feel instinctively — that consistent music study sharpens discipline, focus, and emotional well-being. In the Mommy Maestra article, the author reflects on why she enrolled her own children in music lessons and committed to a minimum of two years’ study: not just for the music itself, but for the life skills it helps develop.
Not every city has an initiative like The Harmony Project, but parents everywhere can still make music education a priority in their children’s lives. Whether it’s guitar, piano, voice, or violin, the benefits reach far beyond the notes on the page.
At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we’re proud to offer private music instruction in Grosse Pointe and Canton, with programs designed for all ages and backgrounds. While we aren’t affiliated with The Harmony Project, we deeply support the mission of using music as a force for equity, growth, and empowerment.
