🎵 Commentary: Why Music Education Matters More Than Test Scores Alone
Based on an article by Keith Wunderlich, originally published at Freep.com
At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we’re proud to echo the message shared by Keith Wunderlich, Superintendent of New Haven Community Schools: music education matters—deeply, consistently, and across every student’s learning journey.
As Wunderlich highlights, the return of music programs in New Haven wasn’t just about reviving band practice—it was about reviving student engagement, creativity, and community identity. When music classes returned, so did a spark in the school culture. The abandoned music room became a vibrant learning hub where students began thinking more critically, listening more closely, and collaborating more effectively.
And the benefits don’t stop at anecdotal success. A growing body of research connects music study with improved language skills, spatial reasoning, creativity, and discipline. Even beyond academics, students in music programs learn perseverance, leadership, and how to bring diverse ideas together—a skill more valuable than ever in today’s world.
Music education is not a luxury or a side hobby. It is a core component of a well-rounded education. Like Wunderlich says, music may not appear on the MEAP or SAT, but it plays a real and lasting role in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
We stand with New Haven, and with every parent, educator, and policymaker who believes music should be in every school.
🎶 Let’s keep the music playing.
