Commentary: Elvis’ Guitars Get Expert Attention from Master Luthier Scott Baxendale

We came across a fascinating story by arts and culture reporter André Gallant about Athens-based guitar maker Scott Baxendale, who will soon begin work restoring and maintaining the legendary Elvis Presley’s guitar collection at Graceland.
Baxendale, a respected luthier known for converting vintage Harmony guitars and his work with the Roy Acuff collection, has been tapped for this role thanks to his growing reputation among top musicians—including Michael Lockwood, husband of Lisa Marie Presley. Rather than risk transporting the priceless instruments, Baxendale will set up shop on-site at Graceland, serving as what he jokingly refers to as “Elvis’ posthumous guitar tech.”
In addition to this incredible opportunity, Baxendale was recently named a finalist in the American Craft Council’s Excellence Awards, which could lead to a residency at the Balvenie Scotch distillery in Scotland. Baxendale attributes much of this recognition to the luthier school he operates in Athens, which continues to pass on traditional guitar-building techniques to a new generation of craftspeople.
