Music Together is based on Dr. Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory, the leading research on how we learn music similarly to how we learn language.

- Tonal and Rhythmic Variety: Our curriculum offers a wide range of tonalities and rhythms to build deep musical understanding.
- Songs Without Words: We often sing songs using syllables rather than lyrics, encouraging children to focus on melody without the distraction of language.
- Maximizing Music Aptitude: Music aptitude can grow significantly between birth and age 5—if nurtured. Otherwise, it can diminish. Our classes create a vital musical environment during this critical window of development.
Parent Participation and Education
Parents are central to their child’s musical development.
- Parents as Musical Role Models: You don’t need to be a professional musician or even a confident singer—your active participation is the most powerful influence on your child’s growth.
- Education Moments in Every Class: Each session includes planned opportunities to share insights into the research behind our teaching methods.
- Recognizing Musical Responses: We help parents learn how to recognize and encourage their child’s musical behaviors.
- Parent Education Nights: Beginning in Spring 2011, we are introducing special sessions each semester focused on helping parents dive even deeper into the science of music learning.

Innovators of the Mixed-Age Class Model
Music Together pioneered the idea of mixed-age classes, welcoming children from birth to age five into the same class environment.
- Children Learn Best from Other Children: Younger children are inspired by older peers, while older children reinforce their skills by modeling them.
- Developmentally Inclusive Environment: There’s no pressure for children to perform at the same level—everyone develops musically at their own pace.
- Family-Centered Music Making: Music Together classes are designed as a joyful family event. Siblings can attend together, and grandparents are always welcome to join!
