Music and the Brain: A Reflection on Memory and Melody
By Grosse Pointe Music Academy Staff
Music has long fascinated scientists and educators for its unique impact on the human brain. One of the most compelling findings in recent years is how music can awaken memory in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Even when names and faces fade, familiar songs often bring clarity and emotional response. This phenomenon continues to inspire research in neuroscience and music therapy.
Neuroscientist and author Dr. Daniel Levitin has shared insights on how our brains respond deeply to melody and rhythm. He notes that songs from earlier in life can spark joyful responses, even in those experiencing severe memory loss. This helps explain why music is used in memory care settings and why musical branding—like jingles and theme songs—can leave lasting impressions that stay with us for decades.
Dr. Levitin is well-known for bridging the worlds of science and music. He studied cognitive psychology after a successful career in the music industry, later earning his Ph.D. and authoring popular books such as This Is Your Brain on Music. His work continues to influence how we understand the role of music in learning, therapy, and everyday life.

This is so interesting! When my grandfather had alzheimer’s, we would play his favorite music from when he was a kid to bring him out of the funk of his particularly bad days. It worked every time.
Very, very interesting. Reminds me of an awesome movie I just recently watched that has a lot to do with music therapy and bringing back memories to those who suffer from many medical issues. I posted a link from youtube for the trailer, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
