The Value of Music and Art Education
By Henry Bahrou – Guitarist, Music Theorist, Music Academy Director
A little over a week ago, I wrote about how music and art programs are often the first to be cut when public schools face financial challenges. On days like Super Bowl Sunday, I can’t help but think about it again — because it becomes so clear how vital art and music truly are. Without the creativity of music, visual design, and performance, the massive spectacle we associate with major events like the Super Bowl simply wouldn’t exist.
Imagine football without the colorful team logos, uniforms, stadium designs, or the music that drives the energy of the crowd. Without these artistic elements, the emotional connection fans feel would be greatly diminished. Art and music aren’t just add-ons; they are central to the experience, and they have immense cultural and economic value.
When schools cut back on music and art programs, they aren’t just saving money — they are limiting future generations from opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and community connection. Many districts fortunate enough to have the necessary resources would never dream of eliminating these essential programs, but unfortunately, in many areas, this is an ongoing reality.
Fortunately, there are numerous efforts to help bridge this gap. Many organizations, music schools, and private donors are working to ensure that music and art education remain accessible to all students, regardless of income. At Grosse Pointe Music Academy, we are proud to have contributed by donating music lessons to help support school fundraising efforts throughout the metro Detroit area.
We remain committed to the belief that every person — young or old — should have access to the joy and enrichment that learning music can bring. If you or someone you know is looking for opportunities to study music or support arts education initiatives, we encourage you to reach out to us. Together, we can ensure that creativity continues to thrive for future generations.
