Thinking about music lessons in the New Year? If you have the desire to play music then why not make this your New Year’s resolution? Take music lessons in Canton, MI at GP Music Academy. We have instructors with University training in music to assist you on your musical quest. Studying privately with a qualified music instructor is great for both child and adult music students. Learning a musical instrument is a very disciplined activity with many technicalities involved. Students who work with an instructor will avoid common pitfalls and other bad habits. It’s easiest to learn the correct way first!
Learn Bass Guitar
If you want to learn bass guitar, it may be wise to familiarize yourself with some of the humor that surrounds bass players and the playing of bass in general. Much of this humor is derived from the relative simplicity of the bass lines played by rock musicians. I believe that all instruments have technical aspects that are difficult to master including bass guitar. Many people who do learn bass guitar after trying guitar or piano will admit that it is easier in the primary stages of learning. Here are some funny bass guitar player jokes I found while surfing the web:

Who says cello players don’t rock?
I’ve always thought it was cool seeing orchestral instruments play rock and pop songs. Check out this cello player performing Rock You Like a Hurricane by The Scorpions.
From an article on August 6 2009:
The 15 Greatest Cello Performances in Popular Music
The Cello is the second largest and deepest string instrument on the scale after the double-bass. While it is mainly used in classical orchestras and solo pieces, the Cello as also been used in many popular rock and pop songs. Here are my picks for the best Cello songs:
15. Atom Heart Mother
This 23 minute epic instrumental song is one of PF’s best in my opinion. What makes this song a really master piece is its use of classical instruments; horns, flutes, and of coarse some nicely done cello work.
14. Enter Sandman (Instrumental Version)
I could have picked any song by this band (they are a Cello Metal band after all). But this song really stood out to me because: 1) Its a cover of a very popular Metallica song and 2) Its performed with only string instruments. Too awesome.
Free Sheet Music on new Guitar Ensemble Site
I received an email today from a High School Music teacher who recently launched a new website called www.writtenforguitar.com. George Wanat has been teaching in a New York City public High School for the last 10 years. His new website and musical arrangements available on the site are his response to the “unsatisfying guitar music I found available from the big publishing companies” George states. Being a guitar player and an avid sheet music buyer, I agree whole heartedly. It’s very hard to find a lot of songs arranged for solo guitar, guitar duets, and larger guitar ensembles. His email caught my my instantly because on it he offers a free pdf version of “The Godfather Suite” for guitar duet. I have always loved this piece of music and now I can’t wait to play it with another guitar player! If you go to George’s website he also offers three other pieces for free download. Currently there is a free arrangement of “Yesterday” by the Beatles plus a couple popular video game themes, Super Mario Brothers and Mortal Kombat. Of course there is plenty of other music available for purchase as well. If you are a guitar enthusiast at any level then you will be sure to enjoy this Free Sheet Music. Be sure to check it out!

Band/Ensemble Classes
This year at Grosse Pointe Music Academy we will offer a variety of Band/Ensemble classes for students of all ages and instruments. We now offer Rock Band, Jazz Band, String Quartet, Guitar Ensemble and Adult Rock/Blues Jam group.
Band/Ensemble classes help students learn the skills necessary for playing and performing with other musicians. We help to match students of similar ages, style tastes, and experience to make class exciting as well as educational.
Rock Band Classes generally consist of 3-5 band members playing drums, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard, and vocals. Students will learn to jam as a group over basic rock/blues changes in all keys and play popular tunes from tablature and sheet music. Rock band students and students of all band/ensemble classes will benefit strongly from having private lessons in addition to their band class.
Jazz Band:
Jazz Band Classes will consist of a drummer, bass player, rhythm guitar player, keyboard/piano player, vocals, and any number of possible lead woodwind or brass instruments. Jazz band is a music reading intensive class with students learning to play from written Jazz music and charts. Soloing, Comping, Chord Substituting, and a number of other Jazz skills will be taught and utilized on a weekly basis.
String Quartet:
String Quartet class will consist of two violins, a viola, and cello player. Students will learn to play classical tunes as well as some pop tunes. Reading music is a big part of the String Quartet class. Students should have at least 6 months experience in private lessons before joining this group.
Guitar Ensemble:
Guitar Ensemble is a class for all guitar players and a bass player too! Why guitar ensemble? Guitar is a versatile instrument capable of rhythm, harmony, and melody. Combining multiple guitar players into a group, all playing together, is quite an awesome experience. Guitar students very rarely get the ensemble experience that band and orchestra instruments do in school. Guitar ensemble is a great way to get experience playing guitar and learning to read music while playing in a group.
Adult Rock/Blues Jam Group:
You are not too old to play! This class is designed to give adults the experience of playing in a band and learning functional performance skills. Adult students will learn to play rock and blues progressions and popular songs. Call us and sign up today to let the fun begin!
